About Food Rx

In 2020 the Alberni Valley Food Security Group partnered with Island Health, Indigenous liaisons, Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, Alberni District Secondary School, Alberni Farmers' Institute and local food producers to run the initial Food Rx program. The program continues to pursue the following goals:

  • To provide nutritionally insecure families a weekly box of local and healthy produce comprised of ocean and land based agricultural products , including a traditional foods component.

  • To encourage a circular economy and healthy community within the Alberni Valley by ensuring that all products are grown, processed or produced locally.

  • To build capacity  and synergies that transform how we address food security. Adopting the local Nuu-Chah-Nulth ideology of hishuk'ish tsawalk - everything is one; viewing it as a holistic and cyclical endeavor.
